France Santon de Provence Shepherd by Marius Chave
French Santon doll depicting a traditional character from Provencal village life, in this case a sheep shepherd. Signed 'Marius Chave, Aubagne' at the bottom of his stand. Size 16 cm. Santonnier Marius Chave (1909 - 1999) had his workshop in Aubagne, the production of the Chave santons is still continued by his grandson Christian.
Originally Santons or Santouns were painted clay nativity scene figurines but later also became popular as dressed figures showing the trades and costumes of the people living in the Provence region.
