French Santon doll depicting a traditional character from Provencal village life, in this case a wine maker standing behind a wooden wine rack. This type of rack is called a riddling rack and was used for storing and turning bottles of sparkling wine. Signed 'R. Gateay' in one corner of the base. Size 30 cm.
Originally Santons or Santouns were painted clay nativity scene figurines but later also became popular as dressed figures showing the trades and costumes of the people living in the Provence region.
