France Santons de Provence by S Peirano
Two french Santon dolls depicting traditional characters from Provencal village life, in this case a farmer holding a chicken and a woman carrying a pot for olives and a serving spoon. Both Signed 'S. Peirano' at the front edge of their stands. The female also has two tags attached 'Castellane' and 'Qualité Francaise, Membre des Comites, Made in France'. Size 20 cm. S. Peirano is santonnier Segondo Peirano (1892-1983).
Originally Santons or Santouns were painted clay nativity scene figurines but later also became popular as dressed figures showing the trades and costumes of the people living in the Provence region.
